The paramedic interview can be very tough to pass.
Unless that is you embark on a period of intense and focused preparation in the build up to the interview.
The majority of NHS Trusts will assess potential candidates against a number of different criteria.
The first of those criteria is the qualities that are required to become a paramedic.
During their preparation a candidate should first of all obtain a copy of the job description and person specification for the job they are applying for.
Once they have these important documents they will then be able to think of experiences and situations where they can match each of the areas.
During the interview a candidate many get asked questions such as "can you tell us when you have managed to carry out a difficult task whilst under pressure?" and "when have you had to learn a large amount of job relevant information?" These type of interview questions are designed to assess whether of not a candidate already has the experiences that are crucial to the role of a paramedic.
Once he or she has thought of many different scenarios that match the assessable qualities, then they can start to carry out some research that relates to the NHS Trust Ambulance Service that they are trying to join.
During the interview the panel will want to know what the applicant has done to learn about their organisation.
As you can imagine, many applicants will apply for many different NHS Trusts all in one go in an attempt to simply obtain a job as a paramedic.
The NHS Trust wants to employ people who want to work for them first and become a paramedic second.
During their research the applicant should also look at the equality and diversity policies for the service they are applying to join as these are very important documents.
In addition to carrying out plenty of research into the role and into the NHS Trust, the applicant should also work on their interview technique.
I have seen many different applicants have a good interview when it comes to responding to the interview questions but when it comes to their interview technique, this is a different matter.
The most effective way to improve interview technique is to practice a series of 'mock interviews' in the build up to the interview.
This simply involves getting a friend or relative to ask the candidate a number of sample questions whilst they sit in the interview chair and respond in an effective manner.
