DIY Creosote Firelog

    Preparation

    • To make your firelogs, you'll need a few materials. Purchase a liquid chemical catalyst such as Anti Creo Soot or Third Stage Remover, both of which can be purchased at most home improvement centers. Also get together some dry, seasoned firewood. It's imperative that the wood isn't wet or fresh, or else your firelog won't work. Lastly, have newspaper or plastic laid down in an open and well-ventilated area, such as outdoors.

For safety, wear a long-sleeved shirt and pants, work gloves and goggles when dealing with the chemical. Have all pets and children stay out of the area, and make sure they know not to touch the treated wood.

    Application

    • Read the instructions on the catalyst bottle thoroughly for detailed instructions and tips that might pertain to you. Some brands may have different instructions, so you should make note of them.

To apply the catalyst to the firewood, liberally spray six to eight squirts onto the wood itself, or however much the instructions indicate. Most brands, such as ACS, indicate that it is OK to apply quite a bit and no negative reactions will occur. Apply the catalyst to all sides of the log, but don't drench the wood. Set it aside for future use, out of reach from pets and children.

Remember to never apply the catalyst to burning logs, embers or coals.

    Use

    • Build a small, hot fire with untreated wood in your fireplace. Hot fires come from dry wood, not big fires. Keep the fire small for efficient burning and safety. When the fire is built and stable, apply one or two of your pre-treated logs. Do this every time you have a fire, and you will successfully prevent creosote from forming.

    Note

    • This fire log is not enough to remove existing creosote, only prevent it. If you want to remove creosote, you will need to follow the instructions on the bottle for the proper application within the fireplace itself. However, burning pre-treated logs in a fireplace should effectively prevent the return of the creosote once it has been removed.
