    Types

    • There are three types of teeth whitening methods. The first is in-office bleaching, which may be the most effective and quickest way to get whiter teeth. For this type, a dentist will usually use a teeth whitening agent as well as heat or a laser to make your teeth whiter. Over-the-counter (OTC) teeth whitening agents, such as gels and strips, can be used to whiten your teeth at home over the course of 2 weeks. OTC tray whitening systems are designed for wearing on your teeth every night. Some people also use whitening toothpaste, which works gradually over a longer period. According to the American Dental Association, it is best to choose a product labeled with the ADA seal of acceptance if you're going to whiten your teeth with toothpaste.

    Features

    • Many teeth whitening systems use peroxide to whiten the teeth. OTC peroxide-containing products are most often found in gel form. Whitening strips also use peroxide as a bleaching agent, however. The strips are just coated with peroxide gel. Typically, OTC peroxide bleaching agents are much lower strength than those found in in-office bleaching products.

    Misconceptions

    • Some people believe the timing of tooth whitening doesn't really matter. However, this is a misconception. If a person is having dental restoration, such as crowns, fillings or veneers, it may be best to have tooth whitening done beforehand. Uneven whitening often occurs when a bleaching agent is used on a tooth that has restorations already. If a person has a lot of these, more uniform coloring may be achieved with bonding or veneers.

    Warning

    • There are some people for whom teeth whitening products may not be the best option. According to WebMD, tooth whitening should not be used for those under 16 years old. Women who are pregnant or nursing should avoid it as well. Additionally, those who have very sensitive teeth, gum disease, cavities that have not been treated and allergies to peroxide may not make the best candidates for tooth whitening.

    Prevention/Solution

    • To prevent new discoloration, avoid eating and drinking things that are known to stain the teeth, such as darkly colored wine and coffee. Also, you should brush your teeth at least twice a day and have your dentist clean them every 6 months. Daily flossing helps as well.
