How to Pack for Alaska Horseback Riding Trips
- 1). Plan to wear multiple layers on your upper body. Temperatures in Alaska can change dramatically throughout the day, and can shift even more radically as you ride up and down mountains. Plan to wear several light layers, such as a undershirt, a long-sleeved shirt and a pullover or light jacket rather than bringing heavy insulated clothing, so you can put things on and take them off as needed.
- 2). Wear long sleeves and long pants -- preferably comfortable jeans or heavy twill. On many horse tours you'll be moving at times through dense brush or thick forested areas, so plan to protect your limbs.
- 3). Bring a hat that can protect you from both sun and rain; chances are you'll encounter both, often within a few minutes of each other.
- 4). Wear shoes that work well in stirrups. That means narrow, flat shoes or, even better, riding boots. Leave elevated heels and hiking boots back at the hotel.
- 5). Bring a full rain suit in case of heavy weather. This will be more necessary on camping trips than trail rides. Remember that a rain jacket alone won't keep your legs dry when you're riding a horse.
- 6). Bring your camera and a supply of batteries for all that gorgeous scenery. You'll also want a water bottle, preferably with a carabiner clip that you can hook onto your belt, so you can stay hydrated between rest breaks.
