Definition:

“Ravalement” refers to the French tradition of refurbishing Flemish harpsichords:
  • Grand Ravalement: Flemish (mostly Ruckers) harpsichords were taken apart and rebuilt with new cases, soundboards, and keyboards. Manuals were added to single-manual instruments, and range was increased from four to five octaves.
  • Petit Ravalement: Manuals and strings were modified to increase range, and choirs were added; little to no body work was done.
