Islamic Summer Schools
- Islamic summer schools aim to help children learn the traditional Islamic teachings so they can better communicate with other members of the Muslim community around them. Since children tend to get lazy during the summer break and typically spend time either sleeping or watching TV, it is better to get them to make the best of this time and do something productive. These summer schools focus not only on the Islamic teachings but also on regular subjects that children study at home as well as recreational and physical activities.
- Islamic summer schools offer lessons from the Holy book Quran and other religious books by prominent authors, such as "A Journey Through the Holy Quran" by Yahiya Emerick and "Stories from the Muslim World" by Huda Khattab. The difficulty level of lessons varies among students of different grades. The lessons typically include reading Quran in Arabic language along with English translation and the recitation rules (Tajweed). They also teach Islamic etiquette, tenets of faith (Aqeeda) and Prophet's life history (Seerah). They also help children memorize verses from Quran.
- Some Islamic schools teach general school courses as well such as English, mathematics, math experiments, writing skills and computer technology. The coursework of these subjects varies for children of various grade levels. Depending on the grade level, there may also be an art course where the students may be taught to draw with pen and pencil with special emphasis on calligraphy.
- There's usually 30 to 60 minutes reserved for gym class everyday in Islamic summer schools. Students also play games like kickball, soccer and volleyball where they are taught how to manage organized plays together. Some summer schools also allow children to plant and harvest vegetable plants and herbs.
