Home Coffee Roasting - Storing Your Green Coffee Beans

103 6
Home coffee roasting requires that you have some green coffee beans.
They can stay fresh for a long time if they are properly handled.
The best way to keep them fresh is to keep them in an air tight container.
Use a container that you push down on the lid in center a little, then snap it shut.
Most people know what I am talking about.
An alternative is to place the beans in a zip lock baggy, squeeze out the extra air and then seal.
Then place in a rigid container to prevent the bag from being poked.
The advantage to this is that as you roast your green coffee beans at home, the bag gets smaller and takes up less room.
Be sure to rotate your beans.
As you order new beans, be sure to use the older ones first.
Do not mix your fresher beans with the old one.
The best that I have found to store my beans is in one of those vacuum sealed containers.
The jars work great for creating a vacuum and can be used over and over again, and re-vacuumed over and over.
I also use the vacuum bags, for small quantities.
They can vacuumed sealed, cut opened and then thrown away.
Do not put your beans in the freezer.
This makes the oils expand and break down the beans so it change the flavor of the beans.
Some people like to store the green coffee beans in the refrigerator, but I am not a fan of that either.
I just keep them in a cupboard at room temp.
That seems to do fine.
Storing green coffee beans for home coffee roasting is one of the easier parts of home roasted coffee.
