A great company needs a great logo design for itself. A logo is an embodiment of the company's brand image and if not gives the whole story than at least hint at the brand's philosophy. Great examples of such logos are the Apple Inc's bitten logo and Nike Swoosh symbol.
Usually a logo design is your first contact with the company.

Whenever you are shopping in the market and you come across a new shop, the first thing you do is take a look at the name of the shop which is often accompanied by its logo design. This association with the company makes it memorable. Whenever a person sees a symbol of a coloured wavy window, the mind immediately jumps to Microsoft Windows. This is the brand identity that a logo design provides!

Many designers before starting on a logo design learn as much as possible about the company that they are designing for. Some tactics that can help create a great logo design are given below:

Consider Your Competitors: Take a look at the type of logo designs that your competitors have. Do they have sober and simple images as logo or do their logo designs have colourful and flashy graphic designing? Ask yourself what kind of design in your industry is popular and why they are popular. Should you use the same approach to make your logo designs as your customer or should you create an entirely different one to distinguish yourself from the competition.

Consider Company's Philosophy: Research your company's goal and objectives. Does your company deal in serious business like a lawyer firm or do they have a fun filled personality like a shop for children's toys. What are the unique selling propositions of the company through which you can get an edge with your competition? Who are the prospective customers that you will be targeting your company's products and services at?

Qualities of the Design: Your logo should have a few characteristics that matches the ones that all great designs have: namely they should be adaptable i.e. able to look well in all medium whether on paper or on TV; they should not lose quality when size of the logo is changed and they should look just as well in monochrome and colours; they should also be active and flexible and can be revamped easily.

Consider The Name of the Business: The logo is also affected by the business's name. if your business has a long winded name it is better to use its initial on the logo or simply use a small font. If the business name is small, display it on the logo in a way that provides for maximum visibility.

Consider the Key Characteristics of the Business: Your logo design should also show some of your company's key characteristics or the benefit that it provides. For example, Amazon's logo is a simple lettering of its business name, but what is really unique about it is that the orange arrow is pointing from a to z which means they cater to everything, and is in the shape of a smile which guarantees happy customers.

Consider Timeless of Your Design: When making the logo design make sure that it will be valid for years onwards. A logo should be adaptable which means it should be able to change after sometime. Like the logo of Apple; although it essentially remained the same, subtle changes were continuously made to it to keep it looking fresh and new!
