Read autobiographies of motivational speakers. Analyze their quotes. Stephen Covey tells his audience to "Begin with the end in mind." You should also do the same.

    • 2). Find a topic you can speak to with experience. Many motivational speakers work to provide solutions for a problem that is common. You may be an amazing manager of time. Maybe you've overcome a serious addiction. Perhaps you've faced great adversity in your life. If you have a great talent, this is something to center your topic around, as well.

    • 3). Identify an audience. Who will want to hear your message? Many motivational speakers address only collegiate audiences. Some target women. Others are faith-based. Determine who will be most receptive to your message, and gear what you have to say to them.

    • 4). Create your basic presentation. Write your speech, and it can be amended for various speaking engagements. You need to establish your basic introduction, your supporting points, a motivational aspect and how you'd like to conclude by sending the audience back out into the world.

    • 5). Hire a voice coach or public speaking coach. While your speech, itself, may be terrific, your presentation may need some work. Consulting with a professional will help you to develop your voice not only to acquire a better pitch and range, but to achieve more volume, as well. A public speaking coach can help you identify distracting habits you may have while speaking. This coach can also help you learn how to focus on your audience better.

    • 6). Volunteer to speak for various local civic organizations. The Lions Club, Rotary International and Kiwanis often are looking for speakers. Join Toastmasters in order to perfect your impromptu speaking style. This will provide you with opportunities to practice in front of a real audience.

    • 7). Join the National Speakers Association. Consider attending their academy and utilizing their resources. Their website is quite extensive with many learning opportunities.

    • 8). Set your price. Rates should vary based on the type of speech you're asked to give. If you give a keynote speech, that will likely only take an hour to 90 minutes. A seminar will possibly take half a day to an entire day. Beginning speakers with fewer credentials usually charge $300 to $500 for their presentations. Celebrities can easily demand $25,000.
