How to Paint Non-Metal Rust
- 1). Clean the rust stain with a commercial rust-removing household cleaner according to the manufacturer's instructions. Scrub the area until you make no more progress in removing the stain.
- 2). Wash the entire surface of the area to be painted with soapy water. Wipe clean with a water-moistened cloth. Towel-dry or air-dry.
- 3). Paint a layer of stain-blocking primer over the rust stain, using a paintbrush or roller. The color of the primer can either be white or a lighter shade of the color of the final paint layer. The primer should be the same type of paint as the final layer. Vinyl or water-based primers go with vinyl or water-based paints. Oil primers go with oil paints. Allow the primer to dry for the manufacturer-recommended amount of time.
- 4). Cover the entire surface with a layer of primer so that the stained area is double-coated. Allow the primer to dry for the manufacturer-recommended amount of time.
- 5). Paint the area with a top coat. Allow the paint to dry for the manufacturer-recommended amount of time. You may paint another layer or clear top coat after the first paint layer dries. Let the paint cure or harden for 48 to 72 hours before using the item or surface.
