burning fat over 40

A quick Google search will find you millions of articles and products that are designed to help you lose weight or build muscle. Apart from the fact that most of these are of, at best, a "debatable" quality, very few are geared directly to those of us who are approaching 40, 50, 60 or more. So what do we do? Accept that are in-shape days are over? No! With a little bit of thought and effort there is no reason not to make better progress at 40 than at 20. Follow these tips and you are well on the way.

1: Keep an eye on your diet. Okay, this is an obvious one. There is nothing wrong with an occasional beer and pizza (at any age), but as we get older, this need to be the exception rather than the rule.

2: Take take of the recovery stuff. Stretching and foam rolling should be more than just an afterthought. If you can't train because you are injured, you are not going to make any progress.

3: Fit training in with your life. I could write an excellent training program involving twice daily session etc, however for a working parent with kids this program is useless. There are some solid programs out there which are easy to follow and will give you the results you want without taking over your life.

4: Ease off the carbs. As we leave our twenties and thirties, carb tolerance tends to decrease. Things like bread and pasta tend to end up rather more easily as bodyfat than a decade previously. This doesn't mean that all carbs need to be dropped, simply that starchy carbs should be the exception rather than the rule.

5: Keep weight-training. As we age our bodies progressively lose muscle. Given that muscle burns calories, the less we have, the less we can eat without getting fat. Your aim should always be to increase (or at the very least maintain) your muscle mass in order to keep your metabolism high and store less fat.

By applying these simple suggestions to your training, it is relatively straightforward to lose fat after 40.
