    • 1). Determine your guest list. Doing this first will help you determine what type of cocktail party to prepare for. If your guests are all business associates the event may be different than if you are throwing a cocktail party for close friends and family. Send invitations two to three weeks in advance.

    • 2). Choose a theme. Theme parties can be subtle or extreme. The theme could be as basic as a particular color or flavor that is repeated throughout the drinks, food and decor, or it could go so far as a costume party centerd around a favorite movie.

    • 3). Create a master list. Designate a notebook for planning the party. Use a page for each aspect of your party; guest list, cocktails, food ideas, shopping list, decorating and activity ideas.

    • 4). Decide on a special cocktail. Look through cocktail recipe books to find something that suits the theme and taste of your guests. A simple cocktail can be made more elegant or fun with a special glass or embellishments. Have a mocktail version available for guests who are not drinking. Even if you plan on having a full bar, highlighting a cocktail ties the theme of the party together. Estimate a minimum of three drinks a person.

    • 5). Plan the finger foods. You can create special recipes or serve premade or catered foods. Platters of cheese cubes and crackers, dip, small chunks of meat, cut vegetables and fruit are simple to prepare and serve.

    • 6). Ask for help. Things can get overwhelming if you are planning a large cocktail party or a more formal affair. Contact a friend or family member to lend an extra hand, hire a bartender, caterer or serving staff.
