How to Extend a Computer Monitor Signal Into a TV
- 1). Check the audio and video input ports on your television set. Ideally, you want to have a VGA (Video Graphics Array) input but if you have an HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface), S-Video (Standard Video) or A/V (Audio/Video or RCA) input, then you'll be able to connect your computer. Note that all digital TVs will have at least one A/V input port.
- 2). Check the audio and video output ports on your computer. Ideally you want to have an output port on your computer that matches an input port on your TV so if your computer has an HDMI, S-Video or RCA output port, or if your TV has a VGA input port, then your connection will be even easier. Note that all computers will have at least one VGA output port.
- 3). Plug a VGA cable to your computer if there is no other output port that matches with your TV. If your computer has an S-Video, RCA or HDMI output port, and your TV does as well, then use an S-Video, RCA or HDMI cable instead. Ideally you would want both your computer and TV to have HDMI input/output ports as HDMI cables carry high-definition sound along with the high-definition video.
- 4). Plug the cable coming from your computer to an adaptor that will transform the cable into a cable for which that your TV has a port, or directly to your TV if it has the correct port.
