Soft, fluffy cotton balls are perfect for any craft that invokes winter. They are easy for small children to handle and can be stacked, glued, painted and glittered lightly or heavily. When winter approaches and you start humming "Frosty the Snowman," it's time to get out a cache of cotton balls and make some snowmen. - Kids can create a snowman on construction paper by gluing cotton balls in three stacked circles onto the paper. Help small children by drawing the circles first and putting the glue on a shallow dish they can dip the cotton balls into. Make a face with acrylic paint or construction paper cutouts, small buttons or candy. Add ribbon or yarn for a scarf. Kids can draw the snowman's hat on the construction paper, and his arms holding a pipe or broom. Add some glitter to the project, and you'll have sparkly snowmen in no time.
- Transform glue and cotton balls into a snowman sculpture. Start by gluing cotton balls in a large circle on a piece of cardboard for a base. Continue gluing in rounds, making snowball shapes. The bottom snowball should be large enough to support the other two. When the glue is dry, it's time to add embellishments, such as a face, top hat, buttons, scarf and a broom or pipe.
- If a miniature village is part of or your holiday tradition, add a few snowmen made out of cotton balls to the landscape. Use the same technique as when making a sculpture but use with three or four cotton balls as the base, then two for the body and one for the head. Add a doll's hat and broom fashioned from a toothpick to complete the ensemble.
- Make snowy evergreen trees with cotton balls and a little spray paint and decorate it with miniature snowmen ornaments. Create the tree shape by gluing cotton balls in a large circle on a piece of cardboard. Continue adding cotton balls to the tree, tapering it from the base to the top. After the glue dries, spray the tree with green paint. Attach ornaments created by cutting small snowman shapes from white paper. Sprinkle the tree with glitter and miniature ornaments and display next to the snowman.
