    • 1). Click the "File" menu's "Open" command, then navigate to and double-click a picture you'd like to turn into anime.

    • 2). Click the page icon at the bottom of the "Layers" window to add a new drawing layer. Press "D" to return the program's foreground and background colors to their defaults of black and white.

    • 3). Click the paintbrush icon from the tool palette to enter painting mode, then click the second drop-down control above the canvas.

    • 4). Drag the "Hardness" slider to the right to make a brush tip with a sharp edge, which is an essential characteristic of anime.

    • 5). Drag over the outlines of the subjects in the picture to trace them.

    • 6). Study examples of manga and anime artwork from sites such as MangaFox, Manga.com and MangaStream. Write notes on the uses of line, color and composition to create a compelling image. For example, you might write "The Captain Harlock series has strong outlines, solid rather than graduated colors, and subjects juxtaposed against each other to create dramatic tension." Pay extra attention to the heart-shaped heads, large, limpid eyes and slender bodies of the characters in each example.

    • 7). Click the eye icon for the original picture in the "Layers" palette to make that layer invisible, then click the layer you drew your outlines on in Step 5.

    • 8). Redraw the outlines to apply the visual styles you studied in Step 6, then click the "Window" tab's "Animation" item to display the "Animation" window. Click the page icon at the bottom of the window to create another animation frame.

    • 9). Use Step 5's instructions to create a drawing almost identical to that of Step 5. However, draw at least one subject in a slightly different location to indicate motion. For example, if you want to make a person appear to move in your final animation, draw the person on a canvas location slightly to the left or right of her previous location.
