    Speed Up Vista Basic

    • 1). Click the "Start" tab located in the left-hand corner of your desktop screen, then select "Run." Type in "msconfig" into the search box and press "OK." Note that a "System Configuration Utility" pop-up window will appear. Click on the "Startup" tab which will show you all of the programs that load when you start Windows. Browse through each program listed and remove the check in the box next to each program that is unnecessarily loading when Windows starts. Click "Apply," then restart your computer.

    • 2). Navigate to the official Microsoft Windows Update website for Vista. Apply and install all Vista updates. Note that you can also access Windows Update by clicking "Start," "All Programs" and "Windows Update." Select the "Check for Updates" tab and wait while a list of updates generates, then install them.

    • 3). Uninstall programs that you do not need by clicking "Start," "Control Panel," "Programs," then "Programs and Features." Note that a list of programs installed on your computer will generate. Select a program you do not need, then click "Uninstall." Repeat this process for each program you wish to uninstall, then reboot your computer.

    • 4). Free up disk space on your computer by utilizing the " Disk Cleanup" and the "Disk Defragmenter." Click "Start," "All Programs," "Accessories," then select "Disk Cleanup." Follow the prompts and allow the "Disk Cleanup" feature to remove unnecessary files. Return to your desktop screen and click "Start," "All Programs," "Accessories," "System Tools" and "Disk Defragmenter." Select the "Defragment Now" tab in order to run the defragmenter. Note that the defragmenting process can take anywhere between a few minutes to a few hours depending upon your computer.
