Warrior Mindset in Self Defense

A famous author Jerry VanCook says that successful self defense is the result of approximately 99% psychological and 1% training. Survival should be the primary and focal point of every risky situation. The warrior spirit is more important than polished technique. It teaches a person to act immediately and escape if he/she is attacked. It also teaches a person to never give up.

The most essential components of the warrior mindset are:
  • Toughness
  • Immediate Response
  • Focus

These components are discussed in detail below:

Toughness

There are two types of toughness, mental and physical. Both mental and physical toughness means being absolutely ruthless and malicious in your self defense. The objective is to be cruel and malicious towards your attacker. A person can injure or kill the attacker in order to save his own life.

Immediate Response

An appropriate level of force should be used to respond a potential threat. In such a situation, try to stop the attack and escape. A warrior does not wait as the advantage is the surprise of instant and direct offense. Most criminals expect their victims to be in a state of fear and obey what they say or ask. But doing the opposite i.e. resisting quickly and forcefully, is the actual key.

Focus

Focus and single mindedness are very important in order to survive. You have to focus on your goal and that is to survive at all costs.

Mental development happens when a person gets training. You have to balance your mental and physical capabilities in order to make the best use of them. Without some balance, you either are excessively convinced that nothing is going to happen, or are physically strong and capable of handling difficult situations but mentally unable to exercise your strategies.
