Do It Yourself: Crawlspace Drying
- 1). Inspect the exterior of your home, looking for areas where water is pooling around your foundation or where water might be leaking in. Repair gutters and downspouts or make other adjustments to the exterior of your home to stop the water from collecting around the foundation.
- 2). Inspect the interior and exterior walls of your foundation for additional signs of leaks or water damage. Seal off the leaks or repair the damage with caulk or concrete epoxy.
- 3). Place a crawl space dehumidifier under your house and turn it on. Connect flexible duct work to the intake and exhaust ports on the dehumidifier to make sure that you aren't blowing exhaust into the same area from which your intake is pulling moist air. Let the dehumidifier run until the crawl space is dry, moving the duct work as necessary to dry out problem areas.
- 4). Clean up any sharp rocks or debris found on the floor of your crawl space while the dehumidifier is running. Once the crawl space is dry, begin placing moisture control insulation on the ground. Overlap the edges of the moisture control sheets by 4 to 6 inches to ensure complete coverage.
