    Remove Unecessary Startup Programs

    • 1). Click "Start" and type "System Configuration" into the "Search Programs and Files" box and press "Enter." The System Configuration window opens.

    • 2). Click the "Startup" tab.

    • 3). Uncheck the box next to any programs that you do not need to start automatically upon boot up. The more programs you uncheck, the faster Windows will startup. Note that you may want some programs, such as anti-virus programs, to start automatically upon boot up.

    • 4). Click "Apply" and then "OK."

    • 5). Restart your computer.

    Run Windows Defender

    • 1). Click "Start" and "All Programs" and "Windows Defender."

    • 2). Click the "Arrow" next to "Scan" and select "Full Scan." Windows Defender, a free anti-spyware program created by Microsoft and included with Windows Vista and 7, will scan your computer and automatically remove any malicious programs that it finds. This is important because malicious programs cause a computer to startup slowly.

    • 3). Restart your computer when Windows Defender has finished the scanning procedure.

    Defragment Your Hard Disk

    • 1). Click "Start" and "All Programs" and "Accessories" and "System Tools" and Disk Defragmenter."

    • 2). Click "Defragment Now." Windows will automatically defragment your hard disk. This means that Windows rearranges fragmented data so that your hard disk can worm more efficiently, causing Windows to load more quickly.

    • 3). Restart your computer.
