How do I Install a Ceiling Radiation Damper?
- 1). Select the area of the ceiling you wish to install the damper into. Locate it in the middle of the ceiling, and/or as near to any other big openings, such as grills or other service openings as possible. Identify the two available ceiling joists between which the unit will be mounted.

Remove the unit from its packaging and look to make sure all the parts listed on the kit's part list are present. Pull the blades of the damper up and together into the "open" position. Install the fusible link between the two spring tension wire clips, referring to the diagram for your unit model. If your unit has tabs instead of wire clips, install the fusible link and use the hammer to lightly tap and bend the tabs into position to secure the link. - 3). Measure and mark the locations on the ceiling joists where you want the two L-shaped 1-inch by ½-inch hangers for the damper to be mounted into. Attach the hangers using number eight sheet metal screws, bolts or steel rivets, depending upon code requirement, manufacturer recommendation or personal preference. Use at least two fasteners, one at each end, on each L-shaped hanger and more if code requires it.
- 4). Install the other mounting angles to the damper box itself. Use the sides of the damper box that do not have a supplied flange. Attach these mounting angles 5/8 inch from the bottom of the box or even with the other flanges using sheet metal screws. The important factor is to follow fire codes in your area. Use at least two screws per mounting angle.
- 5). Lift and mount the damper assembly into its prepared location between the ceiling joists onto the mounting angles. Check the mounted assembly for sturdiness to be sure it is a solid mount. Review the installation diagrams to confirm it is mounted per code and safely.
