    • 1). Select the certification program that best suits your needs and schedule. In Florida, the American Red Cross, the American Heart Association and the National Safety Council offer instructor certification programs. Each organization requires a training class.

    • 2). Locate a certification course through your chosen organization. Check the local branch of the organization website for class listings. You may have to call the office if the classes are not listed. Sign up for the course online or in person. The classes will be held at the organization's local training center.

    • 3). Purchase required textbooks and materials specified by the organization, including CPR adult and infant dummies, mouth pieces and first aid kits.

    • 4). Attend the certification course. Courses last between two and four days; during this time, you will receive up to 32 hours of instruction. You will be certified to perform CPR after the first day if not previously certified. Instructor training curriculum includes adult, child and infant CPR; first aid for children and adults; blood contamination safety; Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS); Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS); and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) operation and simulation.

    • 5). Take the certification exam. The exam will have a written portion and a hands-on emergency drill test. The American Heart Association also requires a teaching evaluation at the training center prior to awarding of certification.

    • 6). Receive your Florida CPR instructor certification and register with the certificate issuing organization. You will be listed in their office and on their website as an instructor. Companies seeking to host a class for employees can call or go online to locate a list of qualified instructors. Look for job openings at community colleges for CPR and First Aid teachers. Volunteer in your community to gain additional experience.
