IRS Form Information
- There is no charge to download IRS tax forms, schedules and instructions from the IRS website at irs.gov. There are several different indexes that can help you select the forms that you need. These indexes are organized by file name, form or publication number, and the type of tax issue the form addresses. It is also possible to download files that are accessible to the visually impaired, such as large-print files, audio files and files that can be printed out on a braille embosser.
- It is also possible to call the IRS at 800-TAX-FORM to request that they mail you the forms that you need. The IRS will mail you the forms directly. The IRS has also contracted with a third-party vendor to produce a tax forms DVD, which can be purchased from the National Technical Information Service.
- Many of the most commonly used tax forms can be picked up at banks, post offices and libraries, particularly during tax season. Many libraries do keep an archive of tax forms year-round, and will make you a copy upon request. There is sometimes a charge for this service. Keep in mind that bank, library and postal employees cannot give you tax advice or help you select the right form.
- Tax preparation services, both online and at physical locations, have copies of tax forms and can help you both prepare your taxes and select the forms that you need. These services are only provided to their customers, so if you don't want to pay to have your taxes done, seek other sources for tax forms and advice.
- If you are having difficulty understanding which tax forms you need, or how to fill them out, seek out assistance from volunteer tax preparers in your community. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) helps individuals with their taxes, and can be contacted at 800-906-9887. Seniors over the age of 60 can receive tax help through the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program. More information on TCE is available by calling 800-829-1040.
