Toxic Chemicals in Household Products
- Ammonia is a common ingredient in both all-purpose cleaners and glass cleaners. Ammonia can irritate your eyes and skin. If ingested, it can have more serious health effects, including causing unconsciousness or death. Inhaling ammonia exposes you to corrosive gases, which cause a burning sensation and coughing in low exposures. High exposures can damage your airways and compromise your ability to breathe.
- Used primarily in household laundry, cleaning and disinfecting, bleach contains a chemical called sodium hypochlorite in as high a concentration as 5.25 percent. If you spill bleach on your hands, your skin can become red and irritated. Exposure to the chlorine vapors that bleach gives off can result in irritation to your eyes and burning in the lining of your mouth and throat. If you ingest bleach, it might burn the lining of your throat. While ingestion is not fatal, it can still cause prolonged bouts of nausea and vomiting.
- Oven cleaner and drain cleaners contain lye. Also known as sodium hydroxide, lye is a caustic chemical compound. If it comes in contact with your skin it will cause burns. If a strong concentration of lye gets into your eyes it can lead to blindness. Swallowing lye will burn your throat and stomach and can cause enough internal damage to kill you. Inhaling lye fumes can also lead to death. Exposure to lye over time can result in damage to your lungs or cancer.
- Laundry detergent contains sodium hypocrite and sodium tripolyphosphate. These chemicals have toxic effects on your skin and can cause irritation. If inhaled, they can inflame your eyes or the mucus membranes around them and your nose. Ingesting laundry detergent can result in burns to your throat. It can cause repeated vomiting and sensations of nausea.
