    Hair Treatments Come First

    • 1). Hydrate your hair with special shampoo. Your shampoo should be very gentle, using only natural oils. Remember your hair is fragile because it may have a thicker cuticle or outside shaft; also, if it is very curly or kinky, oil has a harder time getting to the ends. You do not want to break it with harsh shampoo or too frequent shampooing.

    • 2). Condition and moisturize every time you shampoo. Don't use grease. Use products with natural oils that will keep your scalp healthy and make your hair shine. Shea butter from West African Karite trees is reportedly a great moisturizer. Use a daily moisturizer, too, such as olive oil or pomegranate seed oil, and leave it in your hair.

    • 3). Apply a hot oil treatment to your hair and scalp and cover it with a plastic cap. Sit under a hair dryer or wrap your head with a towel. Do this for half an hour to hold the heat in. Even if you use a daily conditioner/moisturizer, you still need to deep-condition your hair once every month to keep it healthy and beautiful. Especially if you use a relaxer, your hair needs extra conditioning. Now that your hair is in great condition, you're ready for your new look.

    • 4). Choose a cut. Go to a website that lets you upload a picture and try out possible hairstyles with your face. Choose the cut and style that looks best on you. Skip this step if you already know the exact cut you want. Pull out pictures or print out a screen shot to take to your hairdresser, and go get your new short hair cut.

    • 5). Keep your short bob looking good. Washing it every day is not a good option unless you have kept it natural. If it is supposed to be straight and smooth, dampen your hair brush with warm water. This will keep flyaway hair smooth and soften your hair. Then you can use pomade or styling gel, but don't weigh your hair down with excess oil.
