How to Remove Paint From a Petroleum Tank
- 1). Check that the petroleum tank is empty of petroleum and fumes.
- 2). Scrape as much loose paint as possible off of the tank with a paint scraper.
- 3). Attack the remaining bits of rust and paint with a wire brush, removing all loose material from the surface of the tank.
- 4). Wipe the tank clean of dust and debris. Wipe the tank with solvent degreaser, according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- 5). Repeat cleaning with the wire brush, removing any material loosened by the degreaser.
- 6). Sand the surface with medium grit sandpaper, and wipe clean of dust and debris with a clean rag.
- 7). Repaint the tank within 6 hours of preparing the surface.
