How to Repel Voles

    • 1). Remove the organic material that hides the voles' runways or above-ground entryways to their tunnels. Use a lawn rake to rake up any clippings of grass left over after you mow, which the voles can use for entryway cover. Keep your lawn mowed on a regular basis to keep grass from getting too high and thick. Pick up any piles of brush or dead leaves and throw them away.

    • 2). Put up a fence at least one foot high with a 1/4 inch mesh size or smaller. Makes sure the fence is installed at least six inches beneath the ground. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for specific installation directions. The fence should prevent any moles from burrowing through to the soil beyond it and damaging your trees or garden.

    • 3). Position girdles, or cylinders constructed of plastic or metal, around the base of your fruit tree trunk. Bury any installed girdles at least six inches below the ground to keep the voles from tunneling beneath it to reach your fruit trees.

    • 4). Use scissors to cut both ends off of plastic milk jugs or cans to create cones. Use the cone as a type of girdle and place it around the base of any plants you wish to protect from voles. Bury the cones partway into the soil to keep any voles from digging under them.
