    • 1). Test the chlorine level in your pool with a pool test strip. Most test strips are dipped into the pool and then held against a color chart. The test pad on the strip will turn a specific color after a few seconds. Match the test pad color to the chart to determine how much chlorine is in your pool.

    • 2). Allow your pool to sit in the sun with the pump running if your chlorine level is only slightly elevated. On sunny days it is possible for you pool to lose 1 ppm every hour. Test the chlorine level after a few hours to see if it has lowered.

    • 3). Drain your pool slightly and refill it with clean water if the chlorine level is slightly elevated and you need to lower it quickly. Test the water once the pool has been refilled to determine if any other pool chemicals need to be added to balance it.

    • 4). Pour Sodium Thiosulfate into your pool to lower the chlorine level more quickly or if you have a substantial amount of chlorine in your pool. Use the calculator located in the References section of this article to determine how much Sodium Thiosulfate you will need to add.
