How to Paint Epoxy Over Tile Floors

    • 1). Mop your tiles with hot water. Apply a mildly abrasive bathroom cleaner. Start at one corner of your room and use a scrub brush. Use firm pressure and small circles, scouring the floor as you work your way to the opposite corner.

    • 2). Remove the cleaner with your mop and a bucket of hot water. Go over your floor with your mop until your rinse water looks clear and no trace of soap or dirt remains. Your floor may require several rinses to achieve this level of cleanliness. Avoid walking on your tiles while the floor dries.

    • 3). Place a strip of painter's tape between the edges of your tile and the surrounding walls. Protect any nearby carpet or other flooring materials with a layer of plastic sheeting.

    • 4). Apply your primer coat. Although this layer won't show, it plays an important role in covering the underlying color and in helping your epoxy finish adhere to your floor. Use a small brush to apply the primer to the edges of your walls, while using a thick-nap roller to apply the primer to the interior area of your tile floor. Let the primer dry for the specified amount of time.

    • 5). Paint on your epoxy paint, following the same method of applying the product to the edges with a brush, then filling in the center with your roller. Let the first coat dry, then follow with a second coat to achieve maximum paint coverage. Allow adequate time for your epoxy to cure, according to the label instructions.

    • 6). Apply a coat of urethane to protect the paint layer. Use a water-based urethane to avoid yellowing. Avoid brush strokes in this topcoat by using long, even strokes. Let the first coat of urethane dry completely before applying a second coat. Urethane may take several days to dry. Avoid walking on your tiles until the surface loses its tackiness.
