The gi is the standard uniform of a Karate practitioner. They are designed to be both lightweight and durable so students can move freely in them while also being able to tug and pull on the fabric for certain techniques without ripping it. A gi has three components: the pants, the jacket and the belt. While the belt is known for being colored, gis can have different colors as well.

    White

    • White gis are the most common color amongst Karate students. It is the student's responsibility to keep them as clean as possible and to prevent them from yellowing or fraying as an expression of their respect for their instructor and the art. One advantage of a white gi is that it is easier to tell the color of the wearer's belt, and thus their level of advancement, without clashing or color interference.

    Black

    • Black gis are sometimes worn by Karate instructors as a way of differentiating them from the students. The black gi is also commonly used in Kenpo Karate. Kenpo Karate practitioners frequently use the black gi at the more advanced levels, and they will also mix and match the white and black gis. For example, some students or teachers will use white gi pants with a black gi jacket or vice-versa.

    Blue

    • Blue is another gi option that is not preferred by any particular style, but is generally worn by instructors to differentiate themselves from students. Some specific schools will also use a blue gi as a marketing tool of standing out from other groups in the area. The blue gi is convenient because it does not show sweat stains as easily as a white gi, so they are easier to keep clean.
