Middle-aged men using public transport
I see it all the time, middle ages men roaming public transport from 7-10 AM and 4-6 PM, they're going to- and leaving from work. Some of these men sit for hours just to see the building they are employed in, that's a quarter workday before the clock even started ticking! They do the same thing over and over again, summer and winter, even standing in the cold for countless minutes just to stand somewhere in the delayed train. Honestly I don't get it.
When I picture public transport I see students with mountain skins or elderly women unable to drive. I see families that have planned a "spontaneous" day off 4 months in advance. The only groups I don't see are middle-aged men going to work and rich snobs wearing suits to get groceries.
The reason is quite simple as well. One assumes that middle-aged working individuals have had some money to wiggle around. The first thing I'd do is move locations, or buy a big 4-door luxurious saloon. For folks looking in the mirror at 40, ready to leave to the station, I say: somewhere something went horribly wrong.
Is there really no reason for middle-aged public transporters then? No I get that people have motives for every action they take. Of course, I understand dads don't want to move the family out of a safe environment, pulling the kids off of school. Obviously everyone wants to live in a nice neighborhood, possibly some miles from work. And the reason employees take jobs is usually a responsibility or paycheck thing, not location. But 2-3 hours of public transportation both back and forth, is what I call stretching it.
Your workday increases from 8 to 13 hours per day, likelihood for sickness goes up, mental health is hurt by all the delays, drama and horror that are attached to public transport like a spider to its €best web. I can name many reasons that all travelers will immediately recognize and reminisce about, but I won't.
I see tons of middle-aged men on the station waiting for a train to arrive. Hard working smart people that excel in the workspace and cant wait to get home at night to see two beautiful children, reconnect with the misses and to finally get that old barn done. I'd invest in greater means of transportation, or attempt a move, if your working years are spent in trains. The ambience and space in trains is rarely satisfying, if you even manage to make the train towards your destination. Maybe it's delayed or you got delayed, making the additional 30-minute wait all but avoidable. Don't do it to yourself, is what I'd like to say to you.
