    Materials

    • Gather together the following items and ingredients: A large bowl; plastic funnel; one or more clean, empty spray bottles; baking soda; lukewarm water; ammonia; and one or more liquid scents of your choice. The scent can be an essential oil, such as lavender, or it can be an extract, such as vanilla. If you have a strong, unpleasant scent in your home, first spray the air with a mixture of equal amounts of vinegar and water to get rid of the scent. Clean out the spray bottle thoroughly afterward if you are going to use it for your homemade room freshener spray.

    Combine

    • Combine 4 cups of lukewarm water, 1/4 cup of baking soda and 2 tsp. of ammonia together in the bowl. Add 1 tsp. of the scent you have chosen. If you want the scent to be stronger, add a few more drops. Or, combine two or more essential oils to create a custom scent (see Resources). Once the mixture is combined to your specifications, use a funnel to pour it into the spray bottles. How many bottles can be filled with the mixture depends on the size of your bottles.

    Spray

    • Shake your bottle well to make sure the mixture is completely combined. Then, set the nozzle on your spray bottle to "mist", and spray the mixture into the air. Take care not to spray it near pets, who may be sensitive to the scent and ammonia in the mixture. In addition, the mixture might damage delicate fabrics such as silks, so avoid wetting any drapes or fabric furniture, or test the fabric in a hidden area ahead of time. Spraying near a warm light or window will help warm and spread the scent, as does spraying near a floor or window fan.
