"FAS" or "Fetal Alcohol Syndrome" is a condition that can occur when alcohol is consumed during pregnancy.
When you consume alcohol during pregnancy your unborn child is also consuming it as well due to the fact that alcohol passes directly through the placenta to the fetus.
Alcohol is known to be a teratogen which has the potential to cause irreversible birth defects including physical disorders, mental retardation, and behavioral problems therefore, it is virtually unsafe to drink any alcoholic beverage during pregnancy regardless of the amount.
"Fetal Alcohol Syndrome" is essentially multiple birth defects caused directly by the consumption of alcohol during pregnancy and these defects can range from mild to severe and can include physical malformations in facial features, limbs, joints, fingers, and major organs such as the heart and liver.
There are also many mental and neurological issues that can occur such as learning disabilities, poor motor skills, short attention spans, anxiety, and severe behavioral problems.
Drinking large amounts of alcohol during pregnancy can also cause you to miscarry, have a premature birth, or your baby may even be stillborn.
While it is true that the potential for "FAS" is higher in women who are moderate to heavy alcohol users, there is still a risk that any amount of alcohol including the occasional beer or glass of wine can harm your baby which is why most medical professionals will recommend that you do not consume any alcohol during pregnancy.
If you have a dependency on alcohol and find out that you are pregnant you should immediately discuss this with your health care provider as the effects of "Fetal Alcohol Syndrome" when diagnosed early on can decrease the problems your child experiences and you will also receive valuable information in getting the help you need to control your addiction.
