What Is Breed Specific Legislation?

Breed specific legislation is legislation which addresses a particular or certain breed of animal.
For example, breed specific legislation may enact certain laws which only pertain to the Pit Bull breed of dog.
Legislation of this kind is somewhat easier because it is geared toward a specific kind or type.
Breed specific legislation can be quite beneficial in curbing vicious dogs in many situations.
There have been a number of vicious dog attacks throughout the United States in recent years.
Vicious dog attacks seem more common today which is possibly due to the increasing number of aggressive dogs.
For example, Pit Bulls may not be vicious by nature; however, they have gained a bad reputation mainly due in part to some highly publicized Pit Bull attack cases.
While it is true that Pit Bulls can be raised in a tranquil environment and be good and loving family dogs, it is also true that they can be made vicious if they are raised in an aggressive and violent manner.
Dog attack claims seem to also be increasing.
Anyone can be bitten by a dog; however, small children seem to be more susceptible to attacks by dogs than the general public.
Children are by far the most common victims.
Dog bite claims are made when a person claims to have been bitten by a dog through no fault of their own.
In most cases, when a person is bitten by a dog they are immediately examined and tested.
In addition, the dog who was involved is also tested.
If the dog has a history of attacks or bites, the dog may be kept under quarantine or even euthanized.
There are expert dog bite lawyers who specialize in dog bite claims and settlements.
If the dog bite is severe enough then it may open the door for a potential lawsuit.
Severe dog attacks can cause permanent damage, such as scarring and then possibly psychological issues may develop as well.
It is very common that dog bites and attacks can cause the person distress due to the emotional trauma experienced, and counseling will be required.
Dog bite lawyers will evaluate a specific dog bite claim in an attempt to see if the person has grounds for a claim or possible lawsuit.
Again, litigation or legal action may be taken depending on the overall circumstance.
Generally, in dog attack cases damages are normally awarded to the person who was injured as a result of the dog bite incident.
If a dog has a documented history of violence then of course the case would be much stronger.
Breed specific legislation is geared toward curbing the number of known dangerous breeds in a specific location or locality, such as a city or county.
Each jurisdiction writes their own specific law depending on the perceived problem in their area.
Pet owners are often very against this type of legal action.
Breed specific legislation, also know as BSL, is effective or overreaching, depending on which side is doing the talking.
Statistics for each side can be found.
BSL remains a hotly debated topic.
