Marketing Secrets Tips Part 15

How NOT to Handle a Facebook Fight

Yesterday I saw a grizzled copywriting legend start a feud on a Facebook page. He basically said most people don't get ROI from social media and copped a lot of criticism from online marketers who are doing well.

His ego then got in the way and he started asking for proof of results and even notarized tax returns!

This legend has sold more books than everyone else on that Facebook page combined, however made himself a lot of enemies by his combative language.

And the funny thing is that he had a legitimate argument.

He's totally right. Most businesses don't get ROI from social because they do it wrong. But that's a good thing, because it keeps us marketers in demand!

If every business owner was crushing it on social media there would be no need for marketers.

Thank goodness for that.

Remember: Don't ask people for their tax returns if they disagree with you!

Online marketing is more about persistence and tenacity than brains and creativity.

For one of my clients, we've been bashing away for three weeks trying to get them more consulting leads. Nothing seemed to be working.

Naturally the client was concerned, but trusted we would get them a result.

Finally, with ANOTHER split test and fresh ad copy, we hit the jackpot over the weekend and they are flooded with 15 qualified leads to call this morning (each deal is worth at least $30k/year).

Most people would have given up after a few days and said ah... this obviously isn't working. Cut it off.

Definitely after three weeks with no results a vast majority would have cancelled the campaign.

What separates the winners from the losers in this industry is grit. Grit is the tendency to sustain interest in an effort toward very long-term goals.

Remember: You're only ever one more split test away from kicking a goal. Stay gritty.

Your Readers are Bored

About ten years ago, I learnt two very valuable lessons from Gary Halbert. I've used these lessons very successfully ever since. These lessons are so obvious but so brilliant at the same time.

Lesson #1: Your readers are bored

Lesson #2: Everyone reads your message by themselves at their computer

You can apply these two lessons in tandem. Most people are bored at work, bored at home, bored when they go out. It's all just too boring. When they are browsing around on the web and they come across your interesting content, you are actually doing them a favor.

And everyone is alone when he or she is reading your message. You're not talking to an audience of 1,000 people. You're having a personal conversation with one person. What does this mean? It means you can get emotional and communicate like writing a personal letter to a friend.
