What Are Wildlife Fisheries?

    Conservation

    • As stated by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, their primary goal is to work with people to "conserve, protect and enhance fish, wildlife and plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people." To that end, the service has helped to create many programs, wildlife refuges and legislation. It has also worked to educate the public about the impact a healthy fish and wildlife population has on the ecosystem as a whole, and how to help conservation efforts.

    Programs

    • There are several programs within the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service that work to achieve the ultimate goal of conservation. The Fisheries and Wildlife Conservation Division (FHC) is one of those many programs. The FHC works with state agencies, other federal agencies, industry, tribes, private landowners and the public to ensure fish and wildlife populations are managed and kept at healthy levels. The belief behind the program is that a healthy environment creates a healthy economy and therefore benefits all of us. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is federally funded with the Division of Budget overseeing all the financial responsibilities. Many of their programs, however, are operated through the efforts of volunteers.

    Education

    • Spreading the message of conservation is one of the most vital ways of ensuring success. Educating the public using the media and advertising is one of those methods. Having a regular stream of news stories keeps the topic a hot button issue. Another way is through the work done with affiliate programs, including the Boy and Girl Scouts of America. Social media has also proven to be a powerful tool in bringing awareness to people.

    Legislature

    • The Migratory Bird Treaty Act, Marine Mammal Protection and the Endangered Species Act are all products of the work done by The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Through the Endangered Species Act, much has been achieved to recover species. Flowers, grasses and trees that have been added to the Endangered Species List have gained federal protection and, in some cases, have been saved from extinction.
