How to Spot a Fake 3G iPhone

    • 1). Look for words on the packaging like "iPhone style" or "iTouch Phone." Since the phrase Apple iPhone is trademarked, purveyors of faux iPhones often use phrasing similar to that of the iPhone to try and throw off consumers.

    • 2). Check for buttons. Regular iPhones have one button on their face (the circular "home" button) a mute button and volume toggle on the side, and "sleep/wake" button on the top. If you see more or less buttons, then you have a dupe.

    • 3). Check the operating system. Apple's proprietary iPhone OS cannot be copied, even by the most rigorous of dupers, so power on the device and check out the OS. When you press the home button, the time will pop up at the top of the screen and then you will see a slider bar at the bottom that will allow you to unlock the phone. Once the OS boots up, you should see icons for iTunes, the App Store, and iPod.

    • 4). Check for unnecessary name extensions. Some companies like to portray their fake iPhones as a new or experimental model, so they will tack on name extensions like "nano," "mini," or "HD" to fool consumers into thinking they have found a new product.
