The iPhone is a revolutionary mobile phone that combines the elements of an iPod, a digital camera, a smart phone and a portable computer. It first came out in 2007 and included many features never seen on a phone before. With the iPhone 3G, even more features were introduced, such as an abundance of "apps," or applications. Other popular new features include a spell checker, video conferencing and enhanced Bluetooth abilities.

    Video Conference

    • Video conferencing is a form of communication that uses both video and audio to connect users who may be very far apart. Users see and hear each other in real time, simulating natural conversations as if the users are in the same room. Video conferencing requires a microphone, a webcam, an Internet connection and, until recently, a computer; video conferencing is now possible with the iPhone OS 3.2.

    Spell Checker

    • A spell checker is common on most word processing programs, and is now a feature of the iPhone, usable both with web views and text fields. The iPhone's spell checker has multiple language dictionaries -- including Japanese -- and allows for user-added entries, an English grammar check and address book integration. Any words the spell checker thinks are spelled incorrectly are underlined in red, much like the spell checkers in word processing programs. Clicking on a word underlined in red will give a pop-up suggestion of how the word should be spelled, and clicking on the pop-up will change the spelling.

    Bluetooth

    • Bluetooth is a wireless technology that allows products to communicate with each other without the use of wires or cables. While all iPhones have Bluetooth, the iPhone OS 3.2 has enhanced Bluetooth. This enhanced Bluetooth allows the iPhone to act as a wireless Internet transmitter for laptops with picture transfer protocol support, which allows the transfer of images without cables. It also provides connectivity to a Bluetooth headset. In case the headset can't be found, you can still use the speakerphone on the iPhone to take calls. If two iPhones are placed next to each other, Bluetooth allows the same game to played by both users.

    Apps

    • "Apps," or applications, have been around since the first iPhone, but many new apps have been introduced that are designed specifically for the iPhone OS 3.2 or later versions of the iPod touch. An app is a specific icon found on the screen of the iPhone that, once pressed, takes the user directly to the site of the app, bypassing use of the web browser. For example, one popular app is the FedEx app, which takes the user directly to tracking and shipping information, as well as to a list of the nearest FedEx facilities. There are many different categories for apps, which can be free or purchased for a small fee from the iTunes store.
