RV Storage Tips
- An outdoor storage facility is less expensive than an indoor facility, but storing your RV outdoors also means it will be exposed to the elements. Ultraviolet sunlight, hail, heavy winds and rain could cause it significant damage. Indoor units provide a roof over the RV, and some have climate-controlled facilities. Take a look at the cost differences to determine if the cost of insurance and maintenance for an outdoor facility warrants paying the additional storage fees for an indoor facility.
- Select a storage facility that offers easy access to the RV and enough space for parking your car, driving in and out of the storage unit and washing the RV. You need to be sure the RV is being properly protected and cared for while at the storage facility.
- Some storage facilities provide such amenities as lighting, drainage, battery charging, electricity, water, trash and sewer access. If you will not be using any of the additional services, reduce your expenses by storing your RV somewhere else. On the flip side, a lot of these amenities will help to keep your RV in good condition, making a spur-of-the-moment trip easier to plan. It is worth your time to shop and compare storage facilities to find the amenities you need the most. Inquire about discounts for long-term storage or for purchasing upgraded service packages. Some facilities will reward valued customers during the slow season.
- Do not assume your insurance company is covering your RV while it is being stored. Contact your insurance representative to find out about limits during storage. Compare the price and policy your insurance company offers, too, with the policy offered by the storage facility.
- The level of security varies among different storage facilities. Some offer simple fenced parking lots, while others have 24/7 video surveillance or on-site security guards. Check that each storage unit has its own security and fire alarms, and then decide which security level will meet your requirements. Remember to turn everything off before storing the RV.
