    • 1). Place a warm washcloth on the ear. A heating pad can also be used if it is set on low. If there is a buildup of earwax, there may be some drainage from the heat melting it.

    • 2). Use an ice pack to decrease the amount of swelling caused by a minor injury or a sunburn. Place the ice pack on the ear for a period of about 15 minutes three times a day for the first 48 hours after the injury. The sooner after the injury occurs, the better it is to place an ice pack on it to reduce swelling.

    • 3). Use an earwax remover if the ear feels plugged up and there is no sign of infection, such as redness or tenderness. The earwax remover can help relieve pressure felt in the ear.

    • 4). Use a nasal decongestant to relieve ear pain. Often the pain can be related to fluid that is behind the eardrum. The decongestant can break the fluid up and cause it to disperse.

    • 5). Chew gum. Sometimes something as simple as chewing gum can make it easier to hear by relieving pressure in the ears.
