Install and/or update iTunes on your computer. While iTunes comes included with newer editions of Mac OS X, Windows users will need to download the latest version from the Apple website. The Shuffle works with iTunes 10 or newer. If you have an older version of the software installed, you can update it by selecting "Check for updates" from the iTunes Help menu. - 2

Connect the iPod shuffle to the system using the USB cable included with the shuffle's packaging. The computer will recognize the device and automatically launch iTunes if it is not running already. If you have not previously charged the shuffle, it may require several minutes to reach a minimum charge level before communicating with the computer. - 3). Follow the prompts onscreen to give the iPod shuffle a name. Check the "Automatically sync songs" button if you want the Shuffle's memory to fill automatically. Leave it blank if you want to manually manage music syncing. Click "Done" to complete setup. These options will not appear if the shuffle has been previously installed on another system, and it will use its previously configured settings.
- 4). Click and drag songs or playlists from the iTunes music library to the shuffle's icon in the left frame to make automatic music transfers. If you set the shuffle to sync automatically, it will transfer music without input until the memory is full. If the iTunes Genious feature is active, it will prioritize Genious mixes for transfer first.
- 5). Click the eject icon when finished to complete the initial setup and disconnect the shuffle. If you want to change any syncing options in the future, select the device's icon from within iTunes and use the options in the "Summary" or "Music" tab.
