Most people do not know much about fertility and conception and don't realise that their chances of conceiving can be affected by several things.
Below are some basic facts to improve your knowledge.
Did you know...
  • Most men and women reach their peak of fertility at around 24 years old and after that it starts to deplete.

  • A woman is born with all her eggs in the ovaries.
They are formed whilst in the womb and many eggs actually die before birth.
These ova (eggs) continue dying until puberty when approximately 200,000-500,000 survive.
During a woman's fertile years only 400-500 eggs will be released, on average, one egg per month.
A woman aged 20 will have approximately 50,000 eggs, but by the time she is 35 she will only have 15,000 eggs left.
  • Women can conceive from the time of their first period (approx 11-13 years of age, but can be as early as 9 years old!) until roughly 47 years old when the average menopause starts.
  • A woman in her 40s will only have a 5% chance of conceiving every month.
  • One of the biggest reasons for fertility complications is age.
Nowadays more and more couples are waiting to start their families until later on in life, e.
    g.
, their late 30s to early 40s, so there are now many more fertility issues being reported.
  • When an egg is released and waits in the fallopian tubes to be fertilised it is capable of being fertilised up to 36 hours after release.
The optimum time for it to be fertilised, however, is 12-24 hours after release.
Sperm lives for up to 72 hours after ejaculation so the best chance of conception is the 3-4 days around ovulation- the day before and up to 36 hours after the egg has been released.
  • 20% of women in the UK wrongly believe that they can conceive just before or just after their period and also at any time during their menstrual cycle.
    This is not true.
  • Sperm dies after 7 days in the testes.
In order for the sperm to get to the egg in time to fertilise it it is very important that they have maximum energy and life.
Ejaculation every 3-4 days is essential in order to maximise the chances of conception.
