How to Adjust the String Spacing on a Hofner Bass

    • 1). Lay the soft towel down on a work bench. Place the Hofner bass on top of the towel. Support the neck and headstock with the pillow or rolled-up towel.

    • 2). Turn the tuners on the headstock to loosen the strings. Loosen the strings until they are floppy. This relieves the tension on the bridge.

    • 3). Place the string spacing rule on the bridge. Move the string spacing rule until the marks on the rule are aligned with the fourth string saddle and the first string saddle. The rule shows you the exact distance between the fourth string and the first string saddle. Use the string spacing rule to find the correct distance between all four string saddles.

    • 4). Loosen and adjust the third string and second string bridge saddles with the Allen wrench. Loosen the saddles and move them until they are perfectly aligned to the string spacing rule. Tighten the saddles with the Allen wrench, and leave the fourth string and first string saddles in place. They are the reference point.
