2-Way vs. 3-Way Car Speakers
- Two-way speakers contain only two distinct drivers, or individual speakers, that produce sound. These drivers are usually a tweeter, which reproduces high-frequency sound, and a woofer, which reproduces low-frequency sounds. Two-way speakers may have more than one tweeter or woofer but no other drivers.
- Three-way speakers contain three different types of driver. They are usually a tweeter, a midrange, and a woofer. The midrange driver reproduces sound frequencies that fall between high and low and it can create a major improvement in sound quality. Three-way speakers tend to be larger than 2-way speakers and often require more power.
- On paper, 3-way speakers appear to be the superior choice because of the enhanced sound separation that the third driver creates. However, the quality of drivers and the speakers' other internal components are also important comparison factors. The best way to compare speakers is by simply listening to them.
