Teen suicide is a pretty serious subject. Sadly, gay teens may be even more likely to commit or attempt suicide than are straight teens.

As a result there have been some recent changes to screening guidelines for pediatricians that include GLBT teens.

These were published in the journal, Pediatrics. They state:

Although no specific tests are capable of identifying a suicidal person, specific risk factors exist...Fixed risk factors include family history of suicide or suicide attempts, male gender, parental mental health problems, gay or bisexual orientation, a history of physical or sexual abuse, and a previous suicide attempt.

It is encouraging to see the medical profession taking this issue seriously. It also underscores another reason it can be really helpful to be out to your doctor.
