Should You Buy Your Own Yoga Mat?
Ian and I decided to give the swimming pool a break in the winter time and move into the yoga room at our local gym.
We were used to hardcore aerobic work and thought that yoga might be a little lightweight for us.
We had seen people in the yoga room, essentially resting on their mats and didn't really have a clue what it was all about.
But, honestly, it looked sort of fun.
So, before we headed in for our first class we really needed to know if we should buy a yoga mat.
-There are numerous reasons why you might want to buy a mat.
First of all, it protects you from the dirt and grime on the floor.
It also gives you a bit of padding to work on.
Finally, it protects the floor from your sweat.
So, buying your own yoga mat is actually doing everyone a huge favor.
-When you get to your first yoga class there might be a stack of mats in the corner.
Many gyms and fitness centers have these because not all people who do yoga want to invest in a yoga mat.
If you do choose to use these communal mats, make sure that you wash them down with antibacterial agents before you start, or you could come home with more than just a few sore muscles.
-Bikram yoga, or hot yoga, is a whole different story and then you absolutely need some type of yoga mat beneath you.
Especially if you are a man, you will likely sweat out buckets during a one hour class and if you don't have something beneath you to mop it up, you will be slipping and sliding all over the class.
In addition, you will be spreading your wonderful germs to everyone who takes the class after you.
So, make sure that you choose the right mat for this type of yoga.
Yoga mats are extremely inexpensive and as important to yoga as any other piece of equipment is to other sports that you take part in.
You can do yoga without a yoga mat, but for many reasons it is not advisable.
