Having a car accident is not expected in our lives even though the odds of being involved in one are very high. The elderly couple driving along together on aMinnesotaroad most likely did not think they would be involved in a serious crash which would result in injuries. This couple ended up receiving 3.8 million dollars in auto accident settlement money because of their injuries.

The two elderly people were driving along on a nice day without a care in the world when an approaching vehicle crossed the line and struck their vehicle. The cause of the accident was decided to have been driver inattentiveness since the day was so nice and there was no reason for the driver to cross the middle line.

Severe and life changing injuries were inflicted upon the 63 year old woman in the car. Her right side was hit considerably hard and she experienced severe fractures in her shoulder, arm, hip, leg, pelvis and foot. An in-hospital infection occurred in her left hand which resulted in gangrene. The gangrene had to be stopped so her arm was amputated below her elbow.

At the time of the settlement agreement the plaintiff had already amassed $471,000 in medical expenses. There was also $391,000 in projected future medical expenses on the table. Modifications needed at the home were expected to cost near $310,000 and somewhere between $213,000 and $657,000 would have to go to a life care plan to adapt her to the injuries that she incurred during the accident.

The year 2007 was when the accident actually took place but it was not settled for over three reasons. The reason the settlement took so long to win was because the couple had signed papers saying the insurance company was not liable any further after paying out to the limit of the defendant's policy. They had signed these papers before speaking with a legal professional.

Those of you that have been seriously hurt in an accident need to make sure that you can prove that you were not at fault according to the laws in your state. Each state has different laws which determine what you will need to do next.

If you try to get a settlement without having an attorney you may be able to do this. The results are almost always better whenever you have an attorney however.
