How to Fix an Earpiece in a Palm Treo

    Disassemble the Treo

    • 1). Remove the stylus, battery cover, battery, SIM card (if applicable) and memory card before removing any of the screws. Locate the seven outer screws and remove them with a T5 star screwdriver. Set the antenna screw aside, along with the antenna after removing it.

    • 2). Use a case opening tool -- any tool with a small, flat non-marring edge -- to pry off and remove the back half of the case. Don't break the tabs that attach the back casing to the front piece and motherboard.

    • 3). Locate the tab on the bottom left side that connects the front two pieces. Use a small flat edge or a finger nail to pull it back to a 45 degree angle, and then release the ribbon cable. Lift the motherboard from the front casing.

    • 4). Locate the earpiece, centered in a small black rectangle at the top of the front casing. Remove it with the flat-edged tool and replace it with a new one purchased elsewhere or pulled from another Treo.

    Reassembling the Treo

    • 1). Place the screen in the screen opening to ensure everything is lined up. Toggle the volume control switch to make sure it's correctly aligned, and then slide the ribbon cable at the bottom back into its slot.

    • 2). Connect the two halves of the case, snapping the tabs into place. Listen for an audible click. Replace the antenna, its screw, and the other six screws.

    • 3). Reinsert the SIM card, memory card, battery, and attach the battery cover. Turn the device on and test out the earpiece.
