Enjoy these low-fat, heartburn-friendly turkey recipes!
Updated June 10, 2015.
Turkey is a safe choice for most heartburn sufferers, because it is leaner than beef and ground turkey can often be substituted for ground beef in many recipes.
You may have had to adapt some of your favorite recipes so that these foods won't cause heartburn when you eat them. While you may think it's a "either / or" situation when it comes to recipes being either heartburn friendly or low fat, it is in many cases a bit "AND" with these recipes.
Since too much fat in a dish can actually cause heartburn, a recipe that is low fat is more likely to lessen your chances of having heartburn.
The recipes below are just some of those that are heartburn friendly. A lot of your favorite recipes can become heartburn friendly if you eliminate or make substitutions for the ingredients that can trigger your heartburn, and substitute low-fat ingredients instead of their higher fat counterparts.
Enjoy!
Mushroom and Cheese Turkey Burgers
Cheeseburgers are great grilled food. If you suffer from heartburn, however, regular cheeseburgers can be too fatty and may trigger your heartburn. Using a low-fat alternative to ground beef and low-fat cheese will help reduce the chances of heartburn.
Stuffed Turkey Cutlets
If you like cutlets but don't like the higher fat content, try this turkey cutlet recipe. The lower fat content of this recipe, especially with the turkey instead of beef or pork, makes it heartburn friendly.
Turkey Burgers
Burgers are great, whether prepared on an outdoor grill or in an oven grill.
For some individuals, the fat content of ground beef can trigger heartburn for them. Eating a low-fat version of a hamburger can be a safe alternative.
Turkey Cutlets with Mushrooms
The turkey cutlet is leaner than its beef counterpart, which is important for those people who suffer from heartburn if their food is too fatty. Also, the recipe uses heartburn-friendly ingredients, such as grape juice instead of wine.
Turkey Meatballs and Spaghetti
I love spaghetti and meatballs, but sometimes ground beef will trigger my heartburn. With this low-fat version of a classic spaghetti and meatball dish, extra lean ground turkey is substituted for the beef or pork. Fatty meats can sometimes trigger heartburn for some individuals.
Turkey Meatloaf
When I was growing up, my father made a great meatloaf. Years later, when my mom wanted to use something leaner than ground beef, she adapted his recipe to use ground turkey. Both were delicious. Using my mom's idea, I've created a meatloaf recipe that is not only lower in fat than the traditional meatloaf recipe but uses ingredients that are heartburn friendly.
Turkey Tetrazzini
If you are looking for a delicious way to use your leftover turkey, then this recipe is for you. Using low-fat ingredients and omitting the spices makes this recipe a healthy and heartburn-safe alternative to the traditional recipe.
Curry-Turkey Burgers
Ground turkey is leaner than ground beef and is growing in popularity as a substitute for ground beef in many recipes. About's Guide to Barbecues & Grilling has a great turkey burger recipe. Tarragon Turkey Tenderloins
Derrick says "These large turkey tenderloins are a great alternative to chicken breasts. You can also have a delicious turkey dinner without a pile of leftovers. These tenderloins work well in salads and sandwiches." About.com's Guide to Barbecues & Grilling
Boneless Stuffed Turkey Recipe
Peggy says "You can fit more stuffing in a boneless turkey and have an easier time carving it to boot. Your guests will never know by looking at it that the turkey has been deboned (here's how to debone it). Visually, it looks just like a standard stuffed turkey. This recipe was designed for use in a counter-top roaster oven but may be prepared in a standard oven as well." About.com's Guide to Home Cooking
