How to Unplug A Drain Clog Using A Drain Snake Auger
- 1). Spread old towels around your work area. Have a bucket handy to hold wet equipment or dirty water.
- 2). Put on rubber gloves. This will give you a better grip on the auger and protect your hands from dirty water. Remove stopper or strainer in the sink or tub drain.
- 3). Release the screw on the auger. Pull out 2 to 3 feet of cable and begin threading it into the pipe.
- 4). When you feel the auger hit an obstruction, lock the screw and crank the auger clockwise. Unlock the screw, and attempt to push forward again. If resistance is still there, lock the screw and again crank the auger clockwise.
- 5). Release the screw, and slowly pull the cable out while continuing to crank in a clockwise direction.
- 6). Check to see if sink or tub is draining freely. If not, repeat the drain auger process. It is sometimes necessary to repeat several times.
- 7). Return stopper or strainer to the drain once the obstruction is removed.
