    Painting the Rock

    • 1). Mix two parts black, one part white and one part ultramarine blue on your palette. Dip your round brush in the color. In the center right of your canvas, paint a large, irregular shaped boulder that is approximately 5 inches wide and 3 1/2 inches tall. Fill in the boulder with the same color. Clean your brush.

    • 2). Squeeze pure black onto your palette. Dip your round brush in this color. Apply black to the left side and bottom of the rock, as well as to the undersides of any bumps in order to accentuate them and create the illusion of shadow. Clean your brush.

    • 3). Mix two parts white and one half part black on your palette. Dip your round brush in color. Apply lightly to the top right of the boulder and anywhere else that light would hit naturally. This will create the illusion of highlights. Clean your brush.

    • 4). Mix two parts Hooker's green, one half part yellow ochre and one half part cadmium yellow on your palette. Dip your round brush into the color. Apply paint in thin, upward-reaching strokes around the sides and front of the boulder to resemble field grass. Allow some blades to be longer or to curve more than others. Clean your brush.

    Painting the Lamb

    • 1). Mix three parts white, one half part yellow ochre and one eight part black on your palette. Dip your round brush into this color. About 2 inches above the rock, paint a horizontal oval that is approximately 2 1/2 inches long. Fill in the oval with the same color. This will be the lamb's body.

    • 2). Dip the round brush in the same color again. Paint a smaller oval, approximately 1 1/2 inches in length coming diagonally upward from the end of the body. Fill in this oval with the same color. This will be the lamb's neck.

    • 3). Dip your round brush in the same color again, mixing more if necessary. At the top of the neck, paint a smaller oval pointing downwards from the neck. Make the top of the oval round, and the bottom taper slightly. Fill in this oval with the same color. This will be the lamb's head. Apply a dab of paint reaching outward from the top left of the head, and another from the top right of the head. These will be the lamb's ears.

    • 4). Dip the round brush in the same color. From the bottom of the lamb's body, paint two legs of approximately 1 3/4 inches each coming down from the front, lined up with the lamb's neck. Paint two more legs of the same length coming down from the back underside of the lamb. Apply small dabs of paint at the knees to create the illusion of knobby legs. Fill in the legs with this same color. Apply a small, downward reaching dab of paint at the lamb's backside. This will be the lamb's tail. Clean your brush.

    • 5). Dip your round brush in black paint. Apply a small dot in the center left of the lamb's head. This is the lamb's visible eye. Apply a small dab of black to the bottom of each leg to create the illusion of hooves. Clean your brush.

    • 6). Dip your round brush in pure white paint. Apply color in small curving dabs all over the body, head, ears and legs of the sheep. Do not blend. Clean your brush.

    • 7). Sweep your dry fan brush over the lamb using short, light, feathery strokes. Blend the white into the dirty white color so that it looks soft and creates the illusion of wool. Do not over-blend. Clean your brush.
